Good Friday Tenebrae (darkness) is not a funeral for Jesus, but a solemn service of repentance and reflection. Candles are extinguished as lights are dimmed, until we are in Tenebrae –symbolizing the fading of Jesus’ life and the darkness which covered the earth from Noon until 3:00 pm on Good Friday.
In the darkness, at the end of the service, the Christ Candle leaves the sanctuary for a time, but is never extinguished. Jesus, the Light of the World, could not be snuffed out by death. The Christ Candle returns, just as we return on Easter.
